About the role:
The research fellow will join a team of academic staff and postgraduate students working on the interdisciplinary ARC Linkage Project “Co-design and dynamic mission optimisation of hypersonic flight vehicles”.
The research outcomes of this project will play an important role in understanding the capabilities of hypersonic systems.
Hypersonic platforms encounter more severe conditions than a conventional vehicle, imposed by an operating environment including high thermal loads that limit the aerodynamic design space. Tighter constraints on the limits of achievable subsystem performance have a cascading effect on performance over the total mission.
Concurrently, the wide range of flight conditions and Mach numbers encountered during an intra-atmospheric flight phase also impose stringent design requirements on the robustness of control solutions to ensure sufficient authority remains in the presence of highly dynamic parametric change and uncertainty.
You will have an outstanding background in Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics (or equivalent) and will work in close collaboration with the Linkage Project partners from the University of Queensland and BAE Systems.
You will conduct research, leading to the preparation and publication of research outcomes in conferences and journals.
This role sits within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) and will be expected to be an active member of the Department, collaborating with other researchers. You may also undertake small amounts of teaching and research supervision directly related to your area of research, as required.
Naturally you will be capable of demonstrating your prior record of achievement in the following:
- PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics, or closely related discipline
- research experience in at least one of (and preferably more) model predictive control, optimisation, modelling and model reduction and use of computational fluid dynamics tools
- record of quality and innovative research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences commensurate with opportunity
- capacity to communicate research concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
- using initiative, working with minimal supervision and ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines
- excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders (academic, administrative and support staff) in a courteous and effective manner
Additionally, it would be desirable (but not vital) if you if you also had experience in relation to any of the following:
- hypersonic systems as related to at least one of model predictive control, guidance control systems, model reduction and CFD;
- supervision of students and/or research assistants.
