Downer Mining has been providing total mine services to the Millmerran Power Station since 2003 with the current contract through to August 2024. Located near the towns of Millmerran and Pittsworth, Downer is responsible for operating and managing the Commodore Mine and associated activities.

We are seeking a self-motivated and innovative environmental professional for Commodore Mine Open Cut Operation. Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, the position requires a results-oriented person with excellent communication skills who will enthusiastically accept the many challenges of this diverse and rewarding role. Along with ensuring site environmental compliance obligations are met, there is a strong commitment to safety and the application of the Zero Harm principles. Applicants should also have the ability to develop practical systems and possess excellent interpersonal and computer skills.

As the Environmental Advisor you will support all aspects of the environment function through providing timely guidance and service to Technical and operational personnel. This will incorporate delivery of the mine's performance targets and compliance to corporate and legislative requirements. You must have the ability to complete fieldwork demands as well as office based tasks.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintenance of the site Environmental Management System.
  • Monitoring environmental compliance with government regulations and legislation.
  • Supervision of the site water management compliance programs.
  • Coordination of the annual Receiving Environment Monitoring Program (REMP) sampling and reporting.
  • Overseeing environmental monitoring and inspections.
  • Delivering positive mine rehabilitation outcomes to the operation being design, plan and execute in order to achieve Mine Closure Objectives.
  • Co-ordinate the Rehabilitation Monitoring Program to measure rehabilitation performance to achieve progressive certification.
  • Supervise land management programs which includes pest management, biodiversity and ecological commitments, subsidence, erosion/sediment control and drainage.
  • Coordination and facilitation of cultural heritage clearances for site including the maintenance of positive relationships with traditional owners.
  • Government reporting (annual Pre-wet Season Inspection - ROWIT Survey, Associated Water Reporting, REMP Reporting, NPI Reporting, and Estimated Rehabilitation Cost (ERC) Calculator for Mining).
  • Preparing and presenting employee environmental training/awareness programs.
  • Maintaining environmental databases and business systems.
  • GIS mapping and application (Google Earth Pro and QGIS).
  • Qualifications:

    Tertiary qualification in an environmental discipline is required with knowledge of environmental issues relevant to the coal mining industry highly regarded. Experience with REMP monitoring techniques and AusRIVAS qualifications would also be highly regarded. Experience with contractor management will be beneficial to your application, but not mandatory. Familiarity with Risk Management Processes and Controls and Health, Safety, Environmental Management Systems will also be an advantage.

    Additional information:

    This role will be on a Monday to Friday roster, with shared single accommodation provided in Millmerran.
